NHS Health Checks
About NHS Health Checks for those aged 40 to 74
An NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your cardiovascular health. It can tell you whether you’re at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease or stroke.
If you’re aged 40-74 and receive an invitation for an NHS Health Check from your GP, it is important to say yes so you can stay on top of your health and feel your best.
Watch the video where Dorset GP, Dr Ben Oxley, explains how you get invited for an NHS Health Check as well as what to expect when you come for an appointment at your GP surgery.
The NHS Health Check is specifically designed for people aged 40 to 74 because this is when the risk of developing conditions like heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and dementia starts to increase. The check helps spot early warning signs and supports people in making lifestyle changes to reduce their risk.
If you’re aged 40 to 74 and do not have a pre-existing health condition, you should be invited to an NHS Health Check by your GP every 5 years.
Why not under 40?
For those under 40, the risk of these conditions is generally lower. Instead, younger people are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle and visit their GP if they have specific health concerns, risk factors, or a family history of certain conditions.
Why not over 74?
For those over 74, regular health reviews and targeted screening programs (such as for cancer or dementia) are available. Since individual health needs vary more with age, care is usually tailored rather than following the standard NHS Health Check format.
If you think you are eligible but have not been invited, contact your GP surgery>>
That said, if anyone—regardless of age—has concerns about their health, they should always speak to their GP!
